Hello and welcome to A Year of Positivity!
One of the first few things people usually notice about me is how bubbly and upbeat I am.
Family, close friends and colleagues have all been known to nickname me ‘Sunshine and Roses’ and ‘Miss Pep in Her Step.’ I’m always asked questions like, “How can you be so peppy in the morning?” or, “What drug are you on, and where can I get some?” or, “How is it that you’re just so energetic and positive all the time?”
These are excellent questions, though the second one always throws me off. First, I’m a morning person (mostly). Second, it’s important to say that I don’t do drugs, and I don’t condone the use or abuse of them. Third, I’ll be the first person to stand up, throw my hands up, and say I’m not always ‘Miss Pep in Her Step’ nor am I always full of ‘Sunshine and Roses.’ (My boyfriend and my grandma can both attest to this.)
Recently, I asked myself why I’m always being asked these questions. However, when I sit down and think about it, the answer to how I seem so happy and positive all the time is a lengthy and complicated answer which comprises a multitude of significant reasons why I lean towards positivity more often than not.
Life has a funny way of trying to pull us down, in so many ways, in so many directions. Sometimes life throws so much at us that we get incredibly overwhelmed and we feel like we’re barely staying afloat, barely surviving, and sometimes it makes us want to throw in the towel and give up. Coming from personal experience, when it rains, it really pours. There has even been times where I’ve felt completely alone despite being surrounded by all the people I love. Sometimes I’ve felt so overwhelmed that I felt like I was drowning.
Most people don’t see this part of me, because I simply leave it off social media, and when I compare my problems to that of the rest of the world, mine seem so small, so I count my blessings, and try to put my best foot forward. I have a very selective and close group of people that I trust enough to open up to, when I really need someone to talk to, so I know I’m not truly alone. Someone is always there to reach out to me when I feel like I’m falling, or when I need an ear to vent to, or when I need a fresh perspective on things. There’s always someone there to lift me up, to provide me new sunshine to light up the darkest corners weighing down my spirit.
I once did a Year of Thanks challenge on my private Facebook where the challenge was to find something in every day to be thankful for. A good friend of mind did it herself, and she told me about it, and it turned out to be an incredible experience that I’m extremely thankful for, because it got my mind and spirit out of a terrible time where I couldn’t recognize myself in the mirror before and after leaving a devastating situation. If anyone reading this is considering trying the Year of Thanks challenge, I highly recommend it, as it’s a great way to add a lot more positivity to your life.
