“Placing your hand on your heart while taking 5 deep breaths activates your parasympathetic nervous system and releases oxytocin. The gentle self-touch tells your brain that you are safe and loved.”—Unknown
When I read this quote, I was reminded of times past when an attack of anxiety was triggered by something or someone that reminded me of a situation that gave me anxiety in the first place. I can distinctly remember that most of those times, instinct seemed to have kicked in, and I had placed my hand over my heart while I breathed through the attack. No one ever taught me how to do that, or maybe I picked it up from a movie, a TV show, or something; I don’t fully know. Over time, I’ve learned how to deal with those triggers, and rarely do I have an anxiety attack. But way back when, placing my hand over my heart and breathing through all the anxiety or panic attacks helped me to calm down, so there’s definitely something to this quote, and it’s a great one to keep in mind for when it’s needed!
