Day #65 in A Year of Thanks:
I’m thankful I’m finally able to watch and enjoy online entertainment in Italian.
I can’t tell you how long I’ve been waiting for the day when I could appreciate watching any show or movie in Italian without having to hit the pause button and look up one or more words. It was pretty aggravating at the beginning of my studies because I paused the show or movie with every statement spoken and spent more time looking up the words than it would take to finish what I was watching. I gave up on attempting to watch any content in Italian for a while until my knowledge base grew with grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. My Grams and I started binge-watching one of our favorite shows with English audio and subtitles this weekend. Then, I remembered it was also available to watch with Italian audio and subtitles.
So, I decided that every night, before I hit the hay, I’d re-watch one episode entirely in Italian, and I challenged myself not to pause it or look up any words. I’ve watched and rewatched this show so many times that I know what’s happening in English, so I told myself I would simply enjoy it in Italian. Of course, it was dubbed Italian, so the audio didn’t match the subtitles. I still don’t know everything about the Italian language, so there were moments when I could have paused a few times to look up some words. However, I knew enough grammar, syntax, and vocabulary between the audio and subtitles to understand the context of what was going on. I can’t begin to express how ecstatic I was after finishing my first Italian episode! I was over the moon because I crave total immersion in Italian. I seriously can’t get enough of hearing this beautiful language!
